About Matt

Matt Chapman is an employment lawyer through and through. He enjoys analyzing the latest employment law decisions rendered by our courts. He’ll hotly anticipate the release of the court’s reasons on whatever the next big appeal is in the same way a non-lawyer might be waiting on a movie release date or on their favourite artist’s new album to drop. Matt stays this invested because he strongly believes that understanding new developments in the law allows him to argue your matter with authority and understand the trends that may impact your case or the decisions of your company in the future. This understanding provides for the greatest chance of success… and Matt likes to win.

Matt regularly acts for both employers and employees. Representing both employers and employees has allowed Matt to develop an in-depth understanding of the risk tolerance and issues that are of importance to both sides. It is easier to decisively develop an effective strategy when you can anticipate the reactions that may be had by the opposition.

Matt’s not just a solicitor who provides advice behind the scenes either. He started out by practicing commercial litigation and is happy to argue your case at court if necessary – meaning that you won’t be abandoned if your matter requires litigation. In fact, Matt has experience throughout Ontario’s courts, with successful decisions at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Matt also has extensive experience dealing with the complexities found in executive compensation issues. Whether it’s contract negotiations or severance package disputes, you can be confident that Matt can advise you on all areas of executive remuneration, including all forms of equity compensation. Matt’s just as at home in his review of an RSU Grant Agreement as he is in the latest Court of Appeal decision.

Regardless of what employment law advice you require, Matt always endeavours to ensure that he provides direct, decisive, and accessible opinions on the law. He’ll make sure that you are heard – and that you understand the relevant law that will inform your strategy and options, so that you can make decisions and move forward with confidence.
